Video killed the radio star
As a grad student at DePaul, I am taking a digital cinema class in which I'm learning to use a JVC 700 camera, a Canon 7D, and editing using Final Cut Pro. My group and I just finished our second shooting assignment with the massive JVC 700. (It's not really that large. Until you've been walking around the city with it for 30 minutes). We each had to go out and film several "still" scenes, then bring the shots together with music. Below is our finished—yet still rough!—piece.
My shots start with the car tires and end with the curious/scared runner exiting stage left. While I was getting that last shot, two little girls excitedly ran up to me and squealed "Are you making a show!?!" They. Were. Adorable.
A few things we learned:
• Plan before you shoot.
• Editing takes longer than you think.
• If you leave the camera bag behind, make sure you first take out the tripod adapter plate.
• Plan before you shoot.
• White balance. Adjust it.
• Stabilize the camera while shooting, not in post.
• Keyboard shortcuts make everything go faster.
• Plan before you shoot.
• Any song will suck after you've listened to it 60 times in a row.
